Repositioning an Established Designer as a Multidisciplinary Thought Leader
Role: Communications Strategist
Client: Bracher Studio, New York City
Focus: Thought Leadership Consulting
Timeline: 2023-2025

Background

The client had built a 25-year career as an award-winning industrial designer, best known for furniture and product design for global brands. As his practice evolved, he sought to reposition himself not only as a design firm, but as a strategic partner working at the intersection of design, business, health, and social impact. The shift required more than visibility. It required distilling and sharing his design philosophy with a wider audience and translating his work for audiences beyond the design world to establish him as a multidisciplinary thought leader on design, business, and innovation strategy.

Objectives

-
Reposition the client and his studio from a category-specific industrial design studio to a multidisciplinary design and strategy studio.
-
Amplify the client's intellectual contributions through high-credibility publishing platforms.
-
Produce durable thought leadership assets to help anchor his speaking, consulting, and advisory work.
Strategy
Phase 1: Thought Leadership Mapping
-
Conducted an in-depth audit of the client’s existing body of work, writing, talks, and design projects to surface core themes and principles.
-
Identified the language needed to translate the client's design philosophy for business executives working across industries.
-
Developed a cohesive narrative framework connecting his 25 years of practice into a clear design philosophy.
Phase 2: Publishing
-
Strategically amplified Bracher’s contributions to design, business, and cultural publications to position him as a public intellectual in design.
-
Led the development of two major publishing projects: a self-published book designed to articulate his thinking to industry peers and a trade art book with Phaidon showcasing his award-winning design contributions and unique design philosophy for a broader audience.
Phase 3: Strategic Positioning & Long-Term Integration
-
Supported the alignment of his publishing and media strategy with his business advisory practice.
-
Advised on the launch of his books.
Outcomes and Impact
-
Helped the client distill his philosophy and translate it into accessible publications for his peers in the design domain, business clients, and the general public.
-
Advised on the development of a trade art book with Phaidon that functions simultaneously as a portfolio, manifesto, and thought-leadership platform.
-
Enabled the client to engage new audiences beyond the design industry, including business leaders, institutions, and cross-sector partners.
