Establishing a Thought Leadership Strategy for an Executive Leadership Firm

Role: Communications Strategist

Client: Geffner Group, Los Angeles
Focus: Thought Leadership & Brand Management Consulting

Timeline: 2020-2024

Background

Led by an established executive coach, business leader, and management school professor, the client and her firm already held a strong reputation within executive and organizational leadership circles at the outset of our collaboration. However, her visibility beyond those networks was limited. The primary goal was to enhance her public presence and influence by clearly articulating her leadership philosophy for a wider audience in the form of a book and to leverage this project to expand her firm’s market position.

Objectives

  • Complete and fully conceptualize a book on leadership, with a particular focus on women and leadership (the client had conducted preliminary interviews but had not yet shaped the project into a cohesive manuscript or framework).

  • Secure a reputable publisher with sufficient reach to amplify both her personal brand and her firm’s reputation.

  • Leverage the book’s publication to elevate her standing as a thought leader in executive leadership and business strategy.

  • Strengthen and align her ongoing public-facing thought leadership across multiple channels.

Strategy

Phase 1: Book Development

  • Conducted approximately twelve hours of recorded, in-depth conversations over several months to capture the core narrative, intellectual framework, and distinctive perspective the client sought to convey.

  • Worked closely with the client to clarify the book’s conceptual positioning and its relationship to her broader personal and organizational brand.

  • Developed two sample chapters and a full book proposal, which were successfully pitched to an established academic/trade press.

  • Guided the project through completion and advised throughout the publication process.

Phase 2: Digital Presence & Asset Alignment

  • During the year-long publication cycle, partnered with the client to update her website and digital assets—including case studies, presentations, and resource materials—to ensure consistency with her evolving expertise and the forthcoming book.

  • Coached the client on preparing for media interviews and public-facing conversations related to the book’s release.

  • Advised on strategies to expand her public profile, including positioning her as a regular contributor to multiple business and leadership platforms.

Outcomes and Impact

  • Successfully published a leadership book with The MIT Press, which would be recognized as a 2024 finalist for the Axiom Business Book Awards.

  • Significantly increased the client’s visibility and credibility across multiple professional platforms.

  • Established a durable foundation for sustained thought leadership, expanded her influence within the executive coaching and change management consulting domain, and helped her reach new clients across sectors.
